Myofunctional Therapy

What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy for children is a type of treatment that focuses on improving the function of the muscles used in breathing, swallowing, and speaking. It involves exercises and use of devices, such as oral appliances, to help correct muscle function and improve breathing during sleep.

This therapy for children can be a helpful and non-invasive approach to addressing a range of oral motor and breathing issues.

Does my Child Need Myofunctional Therapy?

There are several signs that your child may benefit from myofunctional therapy:

Mouth breathing

If your child frequently breathes through their mouth rather than their nose, it could be a sign of a myofunctional disorder.

Thumb-sucking

Children with myofunctional disorders may have difficulty with speech and language development, including lisping, stuttering, or difficulty pronouncing certain sounds.

Open bite

An open bite occurs when the front teeth do not come together properly when the mouth is closed, and can be a sign of a myofunctional disorder.

Sleep apnea

Myofunctional therapy can be an effective treatment for sleep apnea in children, so if your child has been diagnosed with this condition, myofunctional therapy may be recommended.

If your child exhibits any of these signs or if you have concerns about their oral function, it may be worth consulting with our specialists to determine if myofunctional therapy could be a beneficial treatment option for your child.
